2nd Trimester Scan

At 20 to 24 weeks of pregnancy we perform a detailed assessment of the fetal anatomy, including fetal echocardiographic assessment the fetal heart and connecting blood vessels

Fetal growth and amniotic fluid volume as well as placental function and cervical length are also re-assessed again. The risk of Down’s Syndrome is re-calculated taking into account the 1st trimester prior risk.

A detailed discussion and full counseling regarding the scan findings, calculated risks and further management options will be provided.

Patients will again receive full counselling along with their results, and a management plan which will be formally communicated to their referring Obstetrican Gynaecologists. Those who are high-risk for chromosomal abnormalities including Down’s Syndrome will be offered further testing – invasive (Chorionic Villus Sampling/ Amniocentesis) or Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT).
